It is not easy to standardize message exchange protocal because different DHT protocals, Chord, Bamboo and Pastry for example, have their separated processes. Our team's contribution, the Shi-draft-00 provides a hierarchical architecture to deal with the connection problem among different DHT protocal overlay. I think, there is another approach, that is, building a sort of midware, abstracting interface of overlay, thus the connection issue will be easier.
