You should write at least 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. The World Is Getting Smaller and Smaller Most of us may have such experiences: when we are far away from the city we live in, we tend to think we know nobody there. But chances are that we may run into one of our old classmates, or friends on the street. At that moment, we would cry out: "What a small world!" Why is the world getting smaller and smaller? For one thing, modern technology has made various means of transportation more and more advanced. Buses, trains planes, taxis, ships are available in most cities of the world. They carry goods and passengers to and from every corner of the world. For another, with the development of the society, people are contacting with one another more frequently. Everyday we must come across a lot of people known or unknown to us. The more advanced a society, the more contacts with others we make. So we draw the conclusion that as long as technology makes progress, the world will be getting smaller and smaller.
Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Can Money Buy Happiness? You should write no less than 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. Can Money Buy Happiness? Different people have diffhrent views on money. It is held that money is the source of happiness. But it is also held that money is the root of evil. Those who hold the first opinion think that with money one can enjoy everything luxurious in the world; one can eat delicacies and drink good wine, can buy a luxurious house or car, and can travel around the world. In contrast, those who hold the second view think that with money some people visit prostitutes and abuse drug, others bribe government officials, manipulate an election or the parliament, even form terrorist organizations and launch unjust wars. In my opinion, money is something but not everything. Not every rich person is happy, nor is every poor person unhappy. Besides, I think money itself is neither good nor bad. It is the person who uses money that can be regarded as good or bad. Money can be used to build a country but it can also be used to destroy a country. Therefore, money itself has nothing to do with happiness or evil.

You should write at least 100 words and you should base your composition on outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. Advantages of a Job Interview Nowadays, when a person is hunting for a job, there are almost always job interviews. I think a job interview is beneficial to both the interviewer and the interviewee. On the one hand, through the interview, the interviewer can see the interviewee in person. He can tell the interviewee something about the job. These may include such things as the wage, the working conditions and other things which are relevant to the job so that the interviewee can decide whether the job is really suitable for him. On the other hand, through the interview, the interviewee can know something about the employer and the company he is going to work. Most important of all, a job interview is agood chance for the interviewee, because, he can impress the interviewer by good behavior. He can show his educational background, his ability and his confidence. Then the interviewer can figure out whether he is the right person for the job. In a word, I think the interview will do good to both the interviewer and the interviewee. By the interview, the interviewee can find a suitable job and the interviewer can find a suitable person if both of them make the best of the job interview.

You should write at least 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. Two-day Weekend The two-day weekend has brought a lot of benefits to college students. It not only offers us more time to get rid of tiredness and have a good rest, but also gives us more chances to take up some hobbies, such as fishing, reading, or gardening. From these activities we can learn many things outside the classroom, which will add to our knowledge. Despite the convenience it brings us, the two-day weekend has also given rise to quite a few problems. The most serious one is that the weekdays are filled with more lesson, sometimes too many. Because our classes are limited to Monday through Friday, we have to take more lessons each day than in the past. This leaves us little time to catch our breath during the weekdays. In order to benefit most from the two-day weekend, I have decided to make a good plan for the two-day weekend. Of course I should take this chance to relax. But during the weekend, I will still set aside enough time to study. By doing so ii can have a good time as well as make progress in my studies.

You should write at least 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. Global Shortage of Fresh Water Many people believe that the world’s supply of fresh water will never be used up. They think that fresh water comes from such a variety of sources that it is always sufficient for use. Such an opinion leads to a shocking waste of water. As a matter of fact, the earth is short of fresh water. Furthermore, with the rapid growth of the world’s population, the rising demand for water by industry, and the serious pollution of our surroundings, the world is facing the danger of running out of fresh water. Actually, in some big cities, fresh water cannot meet the daily needs. Therefore, to find new ways to save water is an urgent task. First, we should pass strict laws to control any waste of water. Second, scientists must work even harder to purify sea water and polluted water, and try to find substitutes to reduce the use of fresh water.
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes tow rite a composition on the topic Practice Makes Perfect. You should write at least 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. Practice Makes Perfect The saying that practice makes perfect means that after you have plenty of practice in what you are doing, you will be perfect in it. He who practices a lot will master the skill more quickly than he who seldom or hardly practices. For example, when we learn English, we have to learn grammar, words, expressions and so on. The most important thing may be how to put what we have learned into practice. If you only learn the grammar rules by heart and don't do enough exercises, it is certain that you can't understand them perfectly. But if you practice a lot, maybe you will understand them more deeply and you can find some good methods of applying them. Memorizing English words whenever time permits,we can easily memorize them and can even find a way to memorize them more quickly. There is another example. A famous singer can sing very welt. Of course, his talent is very important, but practice is necessary. It is necessary to practice to make the singer sing better and better. It is evident that practice is important for everybody. If you want to improve your study and work, you should remember that practice makes perfect.

You should write at least 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus With the rapid development of society, it is essential for college students to get to know the world outside the campus. There are varieties of reasons why we should do that. The primary cause is that we can extend the horizon of knowledge. Nowadays, our knowledge is mostly derived from books, which is really limited. Only through the society will we learn more. Second, it will enable us to be more sophisticated after graduation. Finally, knowing the world outside the campus may make us full of the sense of duty and help us make great achievements in the future. There are many ways to know the outside world. You can watch TV, read newspapers and listen to radio, through which you can know more about the outside world. So cial practice can also help you keep in touch with workers and farmers. You can take a temporary job, such as a tutor, a part-time salesman, a waiter or waitress to get some experience in the society. As a college student in the modern age, I should find ways of getting myself out of the ivory tower and into the real world. I should learn the society, learn practical knowl edge and the ability to serve the country.

These fake commodities have done great harm to the consumers and the society. Since the policy of reform was implemented, China’s economy has improved. A lot of people getting richer, and their living conditions are getting better. But still some of them are not satisfied. They dream of getting rich overnight and living a heavenly life, which, of course, is impossible to achieve by fair means. So they risk breaking the law to produce the market take commodities. Once these fake commodities enter the market, they will do immeasurable harm to the society. The direct victims are the consumers. As the quality of the fake commodities is always very poor, the consumers may suffer great losses. Certain fake commodities, such as food and medicine, will cause irreparable harm to the health and well-being of the consumers. Fake commodities also cut into the profits of the brand-name-owners. Since the fake ones are cheaper, people tend to be reluctant to buy the genuine ones.

You should write at least 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below. 1. Do "Lucky Numbers" Really Bring Good Luck? Some people take it for granted that some lucky numbers can bring them good luck. For instance, the so-called lucky number “8” is widely used now because it is sounded like “getting rich” in Chinese and is believed to bring good fortune. Yet many others don’t think so. They think that numbers have nothing to do with luck. They regard numbers simply as a mathematic symbols for counting. They are anything but a mystery. They laugh at those who think numbers can bring good luck. I’m in favor of the latter opinion. I think our society is very modern now. We mustn’t count on the so-called lucky numbers to fulfill our wishes. Whether we can have good luck depends on ourselves. If we work hard, good luck will come to us.
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic Don’t Hesitate to Say “No”. You should write at least 100 words and you should base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. Don't Hesitate to Say "No" When we are asked to help but unable to do so, we might as well say "No" with explanation of the reasons for our refusal However, there are many instances in our life that we are afraid of saying "No". For instance, when our good friend invites us to join his birthday party; when our classmate asks us to do him a favor; when our relative wants to borrow our new car or new cell phone. Faced with the anxious look on their face, we may find it really difficult to say "No" even though we don't want to do we are asked to do. Actually, it is natural and often necessary for us to say "No" if we really don't want to say "Yes". We have the right to choose what and how we shall do. Moreover, we should know that if we do not say "No" when we should have done so will not only cause delay in others' business, but also make others think that we are "untrustworthy". Therefore, don't hesitate to say "No".
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes t o write a composition on the topic: Reading Selectively Or Extensively? You should write at least 100 words, and your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. Reading Selectively Or Extensively? Some people think when we read we should read selectively. That is to say, we should select some books we are interested in and ignore the others. Reading selectively can help us concentrate our limited time and attention on those selected books. Others think we should read extensively. No matter what kind of book it is, we should look it over. We should read various kinds of books, whether we are interested in them or not. They maintain that reading extensively can help to enlarge our view and grasp the general knowledge in different fields. In my opinion, the two reading ways have their roles respectively in our reading. However, the disadvantages of each methods are easy to see. If we only read the books we select or prefer, the framework of our knowledge may not be complete. Our knowledge would be rather limited. And if we read without selection, we may not have so much time and energy to be specialized in one particular field. Therefore, the combination of the two methods is more reasonable.
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic How I Finance my College Education. You should write at least 100 words, and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: 1. 2. 那种途径适合我(说明理由) How I Finance My College Education Several years ago new tuition fee policy was put into practice and college students were asked to pay a certain sum of money. And now, all the students, no matter what subjects they are engaged in, must pay for tuition. There are many ways for a student to finance his college education. Most students ask their parents to pay the tuition fee and pay for their books, accommodation and other cost. A student can also apply for the scholarship. Most universities set up scholarship to offer money to the poor students who do well in entrance exams and reward those who do well in entrance exams and reward those who work well at university. A student can also apply for the low-interest loans. In addition to the above, taking part-time jobs is also a common way for a college student to get money to pay part of his tuition and fees. So far as I’m concerned, I’d prefer earning the scholarship. This means I must study hard and be a top student, which has always been my goal. After all, the task of a student is to study. And in addition to solving my financial problems, getting the scholarship can also prove my ability and is good for my future.
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic Is a Test of Spoken English Necessary? The first sentence has already been written for you. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below: 1. Is a Test of Spoken English Necessary? A test of spoken English will be included as an optional (component of the College English Test (CET). Some people contend that it is absolutely necessary to hold a test of spoken English in China because we have been told many times that a Chinese student who has been learning English for years cannot communicate with a native English speaker. Sometimes even those top students who excel at grammar and writing skills find their English inadequate to express their thoughts freely when speaking. A test of spoken English will bring the importance of speaking English to the awareness of the college students, and thus help them with their communicating skills. On the other hand, there are also people who maintain that good reading and writing skills would be enough for the average English learners. College students are already under considerable pressure from their coursework. Another required test will only add to their burden. Also, some students may take the shortcut and only practice the questions according to the fixed format of the test, which will not actually improve their spoken English. I believe that a test of spoken English will do more good than harm. Since China will continue its policy of opening and reform, the ability to speak fluent English is a must for anyone who wants to surpass others in a highly competitive society. Whether I take the test or not, I shall make all efforts to practice my spoken English in the rest years in college.
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic How to Succeed in a Job Interview? You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below: 1. How to Succeed in a Job Interview? Nowadays, in an ever tighter job market, great importance has been attached to an interview by both the employer and the applicant. The interview, so to speak, has become indispensable for getting a satisfactory job. On the one hand, the interviewer can take advantage of the occasion to learn about the candidates, such as their work experiences, education and their personalities, so as to pick out the right person for the company. On the other hand, the interviewee can make use of the opportunity to get to know the job he is going to take up, the salary, the working conditions and many other things about the job he is interested in. Therefore, the job interview is very important to a job-hunter. But how can one succeed in it? Firstly of all, the interviewee must pay attention to his or her appearance. The first impression is always where we start. Get dressed properly and neatly. Secondly, good manners are equally important. Don’t be too proud, and neither too timid. Just be courteous. Thirdly, the interviewee must demonstrate his aptitude and skills for the job and his knowledge about eh job-related areas. Be confident. Last but not the least, the interviewee ought to be honest about his or her personal as well as academic background, for honesty is the best policy. To sum up, the job interview is indeed important, but there is no need to be nervous. As long as the interviewee has the ability for the job, with careful preparation and a fairly confident and honest performance, his or her success can be ensured.
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a letter. Suppose you are Zhang Ying. Write a letter to Xiao Wang, a schoolmate of yours who is going to visit you during the week-long holiday. You should write a t least 100 words according to the suggestions given below in Chinese. Dear Xiao Wang, I’m delighted to learn that you are going to visit me during the week-long vacation. My parents will also be happy to see you again. I’m sure you will enjoy every minute here. I know you are fond of swimming. A river lies not far away from my home. We can go swimming there. I think it would be very pleasant and refreshing to swim in such hot summer days. In every big room of my home there is an air-conditioner. We can watch TV, play CDs or read books very comfortably at home. A mountain about two miles away from here is beautiful and it is worth touring. We can go there on foot. When we climb to the top of the mountain, we can have a wonderful bird-eye view of the whole village. Just phone me before you set off. There is no need for you to take anything. I’ll prepare everything for you. I am looking forward to seeing you soon. Yours, Zhang Ying
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic: A Letter to the University President about the Canteen Service on Campus You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below:假设你是李明,请你就本校食堂的状况给校长写一封信,内容应涉及食堂的饭菜质量、价格、环境、服务等,可以是表扬,可以是批评建议,也可以兼而有之。Dear Mr. President, I’m very lucky to attend this world-famous university, but I’m afraid I’m not content with the canteen service on campus. Firstly, the quality of the dishes should be improved. Undoubtedly, there are a lot of delicious dishes, but all the year round, they are the same. More and more students are complaining about eating the same food each day. So I think the most urgent problem is variety. Secondly, the price is a bit too high. Many of us hope that the canteen can provide us with not only delicious but also cheaper food. Finally, the environment is so noisy that we can’t enjoy our meals in good mood. I suggest that there be some soft music to help us relax. These suggestions are not just of my own, but also of may other students. We hope our respectable president will pay attention to our suggestions. By the way, the canteen workers are very patient and always smiling. So I think if our university offers them better conditions, they will offer us better service. Best wishes, Yours sincerely, Liming
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic: Student Use of Computers. You should write at least 150 words, and base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below: 1. Student Use of Computers Students tend to use computers more and more nowadays. Reading this chart, we can find that the average number of hours a student spends on the computer per week has increased sharply. In 1990, it was less than 2 hours; and in 1995, it increased to almost 4 hours; while in 2000, the number soared to 20 hours. Obviously computers are becoming more and more popular. There are several reasons for this. First, computers facilitate us in more aspects of life. Also, the fast development of the Internet enlarges our demands for using computers. We can easily contact with friends in remote places through the Internet. Besides, the prices of computers are getting lower and lower, which enables more students to purchase them. Along with the time spent on computers, there arise some problems. The most serious one is that many students are spending so much time playing PC games so that they ignore their studies. It is urgent to let the students use computers in a proper way.
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic It Pays to Be Honest. You should write at least 120 words according to the outline given below in Chinese: 1. It Pays to Be Honest Nowadays people are troubled with mass of dishonest behaviors in society. Teachers get annoyed when they catch students cheating on exams; consumers get hurt when they unfortunately buy some fake products; children are misled when they see their parents tell lies so as to evade the responsibility they should take. Why do people cheat? The main reason probably lies in immediate interest they may obtain by cheating. For example, a company, which manufactures fake products, may seem to win for a moment because it can minimize its manufacture cost by doing so. This kind of businesses, however, will be driven out of the market in the long run. For the consumers after getting to know the poor quality of the products will not buy them anymore. The same is true of individuals. Dishonest people dare not take on the responsibility of life. They cheat in class, in office, at home and so on. But the truth can hardly be masked. The moment the truth comes out they will lose their credibility, which is easier to destroy than to rebuild. Consequently, these dishonest will suffer a long time because of their cheating behaviors. In conclusion, no one can afford to be dishonest in a civilized society.
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write an eye-witness account of a traffic accident. You should write at least 120 words according to the outline given below in Chinese: 假设你在某日某时某地目击一起车祸,就此写一份见证书。见证书须包括以下几点: 1.车祸发生的时间及地点 2.你所见到的车祸情况 3.你对车祸原因的分析An Eye-Witness Account of a Traffic Accident My name is Liming. I am studying at college. A week ago I saw a traffic accident , which is still vivid in my mind. It was at about 9:00 on Saturday morning, June 15th, when I went out of the university to visit a friend of mine at another university. I was walking leisurely on the sidewalk when I heard a loud crash of two vehicles just at the T-junction about 10 meters away. Two taxis crashed together. It was a traffic accident. I went up and found that the two taxis were badly damaged. Both hoofs were out of shape. One door of a car was knocked off and lying on the road. One driver was blooding and another was shut in the taxi. Some people were trying to help the driver get out of the damaged car. One man was calling to the traffic policeman station. A lot of cars were jammed on the road. From the stopping track on the road, it is clear that the two taxis were driving too fast. But it is just one of the reasons. In my opinion, the taxi drivers are eager to take more passengers and make a little more money. On the other hand, both drivers don't show concern for one another. Both of them wanted to run in front of another. Therefore, the accident is inevitable. So far, we should let the drivers keep it in their mind that a little slower, a little safer. Taking care of other's lives means taking care of your own life.
The Day My Classmate Fell Ill (or Got Injured) During the SARS period in this spring, the year of 2003, one of my classmates, Li ming, was struck down by the virus and was immediately sent to hospital. The news spread quickly on campus. At first, we were terrified and wondered if we were infected too. However, through our government's publicity on mass media, we gradually conquered the fear and set out to try out best to help her. Some teachers provided darly necessities while some students recorded the English class contents for him so that Li ming could not be left behind. With our care and concern, Li ming recovered quickly. Such an incident teaches us a good moral. Our society is full of love, warm and peaceful, in which people-from man to woman, from individual to individual-lend others a hand. Just like a famous song goes, "the world will turn it to heaven only if everyone contributes a little." and I do believe that it's my great honor to live in this love-filled paradise!

To begin with, English is the most popular language in the world, which is widely used in all fields such as teaching, translation, foreign trade and so on. What’s more, it goes without saying that English majors are more likely to find a good job in the tighter and tighter job market. In order to study at English Department, you have to meet the following requirements. In the first place, you have to spend a lot of time on it, just as the old saying goes, “Practice makes perfect”. In the second place, the basic skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are necessary, because they are the foundations for your future study. Last but not the least important, you need an intense interest in learning English since “interest is the best teacher.” As far as the preparation work is concerned, you should first of all review all the required vocabulary. In addition, you’d better spend some time on reading and writing. Only through these measures can you hope to enroll in our university. Yours

Your role: a tour guide Your audience: a group of foreign tourists Your introduction should include: 1. some welcoming words 2. the schedule for the day 3. a description of the place the tourists will be visiting (e.g. a scenic spot or a historical site etc.) You should make the introduction interesting and the arrangements for the day clear to everybody. A Brief Introduction to a Tourist Attraction Good morning, ladies and gentleman, welcome to Beijing. To begin with, I would like to introduce myself: I am the tourist guide from China Travel Service and it’s great honor to stay here with all of you for a whole day. Just as the old saying goes, “It is always a pleasure to greet a friend from afar”, I wish all of you to enjoy yourselves during this trip. The following is schedule of the day. The first spot we are going to visit is the Great Wall, the grandest fortification in ancient China. The next sight to look around is the Ming Tombs, which is one of the best-preserved tombs for 13 emperors in Ming Dynasty more than one thousand years ago. In the afternoon, we will go for the Summer Palace, the royal park for Chinese ancient emperors. Currently we are on the way to the Great Wall. Dating back to the seven century B.C., the Great Wall is constructed by respective states for fortifying against invasion of neighboring states. By the reasons of long history and its length, it becomes one of the eight wonders in the world and represents the highest wisdom and crafts. From the top of the Great Wall, we can enjoy a magnificent view of continuous mountains, green trees and blooming wild flowers. It is no doubt that one says, “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man”。 Above is my introduction to the Great Wall. If any of you have questions, please feel free to ask me at any time.

Teacher’s Day This is Teachers’ Day and a time to be grateful to all teachers. This profession deserves the special recognition and respect. There is no more appropriate time than this to honour you and others in your chosen field. You have my eternal gratefulness. Have a happy Teachers’ Day. The whole secret of the teacher’s force lies in the conviction that men are convertible. Teacher, who educate children, deserve more honor than parents, who merely gave them birth; for the latter provided more life, while the former ensure a good life. What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soule. My heartfelt thanks to you, dear teacher. On the voyage of life, you have kindled the light of hope for me. What you have done enriches my mind and broadens my view. On this day I honour you sincerely. No one deserves a bigger thank you than you. One day is hardly enough to show our gratitude.
Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Should the University Campus Be Open to Tourists? You should write at Least 120 words following the outline given below : 1. 我认为……Should the University Campus Be Open to Tourists? One can always find visitors taking pictures and enjoying the scenery in university compus. During the May Day Holiday, National Day Holiday, summer and winter vacations, many University campuses become popular tourist sites. In my opinion, university campus should be open to tourists. In fact, there are many royal gardens and parks, all of them obviously better than the scenery in the Universities. Why do you think people prefer visiting here with their children? That is because it is a dream goal for many Chinese parents and young ambitious students. Besides this, as more tourists come to visit universities, these universities can widen their influence as well and they can also make some profit from the tourism. In a word, I think the university compus should be open to the tourists

In the past few years, more and more people like to watch the Spring-Fest Evening Party in the last day of one year. It seems that became the most important part in their lives. But nowadays some one suggests we should cancel it and get something instead of it because they feel it so boring. In my point of view, I think it should be not cancelled. My reason it has followed: First, since we have it, more and more people think it's the important thing in their lives, if we cancel it, it seems we lost something we don't mentioned it. For example, we didn't put something in our heart in the ordinary life, but if we lost it, we found something really lost. Second, Spring-Fest Evening Party is familiar with the old people, they like to see the familiar faces in the end of the year. Third, the day for our Chinese people is so big and important, it means reunion. So in that day after supper we have the habit to watch it. In which means it became the part or even the blood in our lives. Give the suggests is we should change the way or the content of the Spring-Fest Evening Party, and in that means we have give some new inmotions into it. So it not only interested to the most of the people ,but also keep the tradition in our lives.
