Library formatsThe simplest library formats are just sequences of object modules. On se-quential media likemagnetic or paper tape, theres little point in adding adirectory since the linker has to read through the whole library anyway,and skipping overlibrary members is no slower than reading them in. Ondisks, though, a directory can speed up library searching considerably andis nowastandard facility.
