在开源中间件中，一直活跃着许多出色的中间件产品，比如 Progress Software 的 FUSE ， RedHat 的 JBoss 中间件等。
最近 JBoss 率先在开源中间件领域中提出了自己的开源中间件参考架构。
JBoss 开源中间件涵盖的主要功能包括：
流程管理 (Process management): 关键业务应用服务集成和高速消息 (Service integration and high-speed messaging): 集成企业内部多个单独的应用，可以将这些应用组合成流线型业务流程数据集成 (Data integration): 集成多个独立的数据库，为商业智能提供统一的 数据 视图用户界面服务 (User interaction services): 为访问应用、数据库和其它资源提供可用和可管理的用户界面系统管理和监控 (Systems management and monitoring): 对系统进行监控和管理集成开发工具 (Integrated development tooling): 基于 Eclipse 的集成开发工具，便于开发和测试

从展现层，到业务层，到数据层，JBoss中间件都提供了配套的中间件产品，JBoss中间件的产品线在开源领域中还是比较完善的，但不足的是部分中间件产品只依赖与JBoss应用服务器，而不能使用其它应用服务器。
