newer xen kernels based on the pvops infrastructure can run both bare metal (or hvm) and in xen

if you are running xen inside a xen guest, you have to configure BOTH the guest hypervisor and the guest's dom0 kernel for the console correctly. there's instructions on the wiki for a serial console (for the host, it's the same though)
